Using the Internet

Using Internet … introduces the student to Internet beginning with its earliest uses through its most sophisticated “search” operations.

Richmond presents a thorough examination of Internet from its beginnings to today’s complex search methods.  Using Internet starts with an introduction to the beginnings as a military “fail-proof network” that could never be shut down.  How academia adapted it for use as a world wide communications medium which has penetrated every nation and how this resulting availability of uncensored information rocked the totalitarian world.  Two email sources that are available no matter where you are in the world are covered in depth … how can you sign up for these free services, how you can use them, what they will do for you.  Using email to get information you want … news groups … and much more that you can do with it other than just send and receive

messages.  As Internet matured, its designers developed methods for finding and getting files from remote locations (FTP), methods for connecting with remote systems to search them for wanted information (Telnet), and methods for describing where one wanted to go but to hide the complicated address.  Internet and email addressing was very complex … it demanded that the person seeking to connect with another site give the address exactly, what a pain!  Gopher came along and relieved this problem by showing a description of an address but hiding the exact address.  It had Gopher choose this exact address for transferring the “surfer” to the site he/she wanted without all the inaccuracy hassle.  The last couple lessons bring one up to present day complexity complete with directions for using the three leading “browsers” … Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Opera.  Institute on Gero-technology’s list of Interesting Places with its 650 some odd  web addresses are suggested for use as the student’s “Home page” when signing in to his/her browser.  Many search engines are discussed and explained … Google, Fast Find, A2Z, Botspot, Yahoo, and AltaVista are covered.

The email program Pegasus is being transferred to your computer

When the transfer is complete, the "dialog box" will light up the Open button.  You only have to press Enter or click Open and Pegasus will be installed on your computer.  The program was sent from SunSITE to your computer using File Transfer Protocol  to move the information to your computer efficiently and accurately.
